Running and NingXia Nitro!
“So, when are you going to run a half with me?” This is what my running buddy asked me as soon as I had finally completed my first 5k!!!
“Are you kidding me?”
I can barely breathe for 3 miles, I could not even imagine 13.1! But, as the year went by, and I started finishing more 5K’s, I felt a little challenge rising up within me. If you know me at all, you know that I have NEVER been a runner. Oh, I dreamed of having those long lean runner legs and just popping outside for a quick 4 mile run, but that was not my reality.
Who knows what really changed my mind? I think it was the challenge and the sense of accomplishment I had experienced with the 5k’s, but it may have been a bad tuna fish sandwich. Like I said, who knows? But, I eventually found myself training for my first ever Half-Marathon. That’s right. 13.1 miles of running. Non-stop running. As in, hours of running.
It wasn’t too bad for the first few weeks. I was able to slowly build up my cardio and go longer distances. I felt good. Then my husband asked one day, “What nutrition product are you going to use during the run?” Uhhh, what? I had no idea what he was talking about. You see, he had just completed his first half and was the local expert… in our house. I quickly learned that when you’re running that long of a distance your body is burning tremendous amounts of calories (duh) and needs additional nutrition for support. He had used a very common product that runners frequently use. I tried it. I spit it back out. It tasted horrible, and the texture was nothing I wanted to experience again.
Here I was at a standstill now. I wanted a natural product that could produce the same or similar effect. I needed something that would support my body and my mind while attempting this ridiculous (in my eyes) feat. And I had nothing!

I had heard of people using this for a pick me up in the afternoon and had even heard of professional athletes using it, but I had no idea if it would be what my body needed for a long distance run. I asked around and no one that I knew had tried it. I googled it and once again came up empty. We were at the now or never point, here. The race was just about 2 weeks away. I decided to just attempt a long distance run and see what the Nitro did for me. If it didn’t work, I’d have some time to come up with a different plan.
Running- Trial Run
This practice run was going to be my first 10 mile run. I got up bright and early and headed to the local trail by my house. I knew that my husband had used a supplement about every 3 or 4 miles or so. I decided I’d try a Nitro at the beginning and then half way through. Let me tell you, this was absolutely my best run ever! I felt good. Like, really good. It was definitely my longest distance, but also some of my best times. For the first time, I felt like it truly was possible to run the Half!
The day of the race had finally arrived. We had traveled to Wichita (where the race was held) the day before. I felt rested and up for the challenge. At this point, the longest run I had attempted was the 10 miler. Maybe not my best strategy, but I felt like I could definitely do the last 3 miles without a problem.
I was trying to decide how many Nitros to use. I figured 3 more miles wasn’t that big of a deal, so I just stuck with the 1 before and the one in the middle. I packed them in my little pocket in my running pants and off we headed to the race. As we were about to start, I went ahead and chugged my first. If you’ve never tasted a Nitro it’s a combination of sour cherry juice and chocolate…or something like that. It makes your mouth pucker and one eye wink at the same time. Or at least that’s my reaction. No one else????
Anywho, back to my story. We were off! The weather was absolutely perfect. It was a tad chillier than I had expected, but your body warms up pretty quickly while running. It was way better than if it had been a tad hotter than I expected. I’m pretty much a big cry baby when I have to run in the heat. Boy, I keep trailing off here!
So, as I had planned, around mile 6 ½, I chugged my 2nd one. I was still feeling great. The race organizers had done a great job at planning entertainment on the course and there were plenty of water stations throughout. I was so impressed with how well I was feeling. That is until mile 11 ½. Ugh. It hit. I was starting to feel it in my legs. My heart and lungs were just fine, but my legs were starting to feel like lead. And to top it off, I started to get hungry. My sweet husband, who was running with me, asked where my other Nitro was….. Ummmm, in the fridge, at the hotel.
At this point, I realized that only 2 Nitros was not the best decision. You live, you learn!
I was able to tough it out and finish my first Half Marathon. I had completed it in around 2 ½ hours. This was actually exactly what I was hoping for. So, I was pretty pleased with myself. Next time though, I will definitely go for 3 Nitros!! It was completely possible to run a long distant race without using those synthetic tasting supplements!!! The essential oils I used in recovery were also pretty remarkable, but alas, that’s a different story for a different day.
I am by no means a fitness expert, professional runner, or nutritionist. This was just my personal experience with my very first Half Marathon. As my pastor said at the beginning of the year, “It’s often the small things that no one sees that result in the big things that everyone wants.” It’s the little steps that get you there!
